Get organised now to take away the stress of summer holidays.
We’re now only a week from the end of summer term for the kids and now is the time you might start to feel the panic rise and the stress bubble over because the idea of keeping your kids, whatever age, entertained for at least 6 weeks whilst also trying to juggle work and all the other responsibilities you have every other week.
We’ve all been there. You want to make beautiful summer memories, but instead, you find yourself drowning in a sea of schedules, shopping and screen time guilt.
But what if you could enter the first weekend with your diary planned, your budget set, your home organised, ready for the weeks ahead AND your sanity intact?
Well you can, you just follow these simple steps:
The Budget
There is no getting away from it, Summer Holidays cost more than if the kids are at school. They eat constantly, they need entertaining and you may have booked a holiday which is 4 x the price than it was in June. Get a budget sorted and stick to it.
The Calendar
Every year I draw out a 8 week timetable that gets filled in and stuck to the fridge for everyone to see.
Once you have your calendar sorted and everyone knows where they're going to be when you can take a step back from being Chief Organiser and you can just point at the calendar when someone asks what you’re doing that day or if we have any plans on August 21st.
Prepare for boredom
It’s also always a great idea to have a bank of activities the kids can do at home. Some may need a little preparation before hand but spending a couple of hours organising this before the holidays will save you from hearing “I’m bored” over and over until September 4th. Just make sure they're age appropriate and quick to set up on the day. This is also a great way to manage screen time if their eyes are looking a little square.
Snack time
If you’ve ever had a summer holiday with a school aged child at home before you will know just how much they can snack on your average day at home. It’s like theyve been starved for the last 6 weeks of school and must continuously eat for the next 6 weeks!
Rather than spending all your budget at Tesco and having to top up at least twice a week just to keep the animals fed, set your expectations early. If you have primary aged children, set up a snack station including a selection of healthy fruits and veg and some nice treats. Make sure they know that once the snacks have gone, they’ve gone so they need to space them out as they see fit. Obviously, always make sure they have access to water as well.
What to wear.
Now is also a good time to take a look through their clothes and assess what they might need more of over the holidays. If you have younger kids, make life as easy as possible for them to dress themselves by only having items that a) you don’t mind they wear and b)are appropriate for the weather available. You can often find bundles of shorts and t-shirts on Vinted if you’re running low on easy outfits.
Day to day
If you have teenagers then the chance of them being out of their beds before noon most days is slim but trying to stick to some form of routine over the holidays will stand you all in good stead for when they return to school. It’s also well-researched that keeping a routine helps with sleep and brain function throughout the day. The odd late night here and there won’t be devastating to the routine but it's definitely harder to get back into the routine for Autumn Term if there’s been no rules for 6 weeks straight. And you get your evenings too decompress too!
